Rudolf Nureyev performed Bashkirian Dances at school. He joined the Pioneers, the Communist Youth Group, taking part in their free dance classes; continued folk dancing, adding dances from other regions.

First ballet lessons with Anna Udeltsova.
Ufa 1950‑1953
Studied more advanced ballet with Elena Voitovitch, meanwhile studying and performing with the Pioneers, in school assemblies and in folk dance group concerts. He went on to study ballet with Zaituna Bakhtiyarova and Viktor Pyari at the Ufa Opera in its first ballet studio, opened in 1953.

First earnings (10 rubles an evening) at the Ufa Opera House doing walk‑ons, bit parts and later, small roles as a member of the Corps de Ballet.
